Audi A3 range goes Ultra 20 | 05 | 2015

AUDI HAS SLOTTED its new 1.6TDI Ultra powerplant into the A3 hatchback, resulting in a new low of 89g/km. Impressively, it also returns combined fuel economy of 83.1mpg in both three-door and five-door Sportback versions, with the range starting at £20,865.

And it's no slouch. The three-door scoots from 0-62mph in 10.5sec, while the Sportback takes 10.7sec. Both have an official top speed of 124mph.

As with all Audi Ultra models, the A3 comes with some specific kit, including low-rolling-resistance tyres on five-spoke 16in alloys and sports suspension as standard.

Interstingly, to further boost economy, several items of equipment are not available even as an option. A tyre-inflation kit replaces the space-saver spare wheel while neither a panoramic glass sunroof or a tow bar are offered on the economy-focused model.

The 1.6TDI SE and SE Technik models have been replaced by the A3 1.6TDI Ultra SE and SE Technik, with prices starting at £20,865: this represents a £40 increase over the outgoing non-Ultra version. Prices for the SE Technik start at £21,615 while the Sportback version of both trims adds £620 to the price.
