Di Resta just misses DTM podium 17 | 08 | 2014

BATHGATE'S PAUL DI RESTA missed out on his first podium in this season's DTM Championship by just 0.796secs at the Nurburgring.

The 28-year-old Scot, who started today's 49-lap race in front of 80,000 fans from eighth on the grid in his Mercedes, gradually worked his way through the field.

Di Resta them spent the majority of the race glued to the rear bumper of Edoardo Mortara's Audi as the Swiss driver held on for third.

"It's a pity we didn't manage to finish on the podium, but I'm delighted with the performance of the car and the team this weekend," Di Resta (pictured in action today), the last Mercedes driver to win the championship in 2010, said.

"For the first time this season really we were able to challenge for a podium finish by our own means.

"The team did a perfect job today and I'm very confident for the remaining races to come in the season."

The race was won by Marco Wittman. The German powered his BMW to a 1.286s victory ahead of the Audi of Canadian Mike Rockenfeller.

With three races of the season remaining, Wittman leads the Audi of his nearest rival, Swede Mattias Ekstrom by 64 points, with a total of 75 points remaining to be won.
