BMW recall hits RR Phantom 02 | 10 | 2010

BMW HAS been forced to recall 351,000 cars around the world — including hundreds in Scotland — to fix a braking problem believed to be caused by a faulty component. Embarrassingly, the recall also affects the £278,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom; Rolls-Royce was bought by BMW in 1998.

The problem, which has forced the manufacturer to issue recall letters to 905 Rolls-Royces and 10,522 BMW owners in the UK, involves leaks that could develop in the power braking system. BMW though emphasised it had not caused any crashes or injuries.

Globally, 6000 Phantoms built since 2003 and 345,000 BMW 5, 6 and 7 Series cars powered by V8 and V12 engines made since 2002 are being recalled. The vast majority, more than half — 200,000 — are in the United States.

BMW said a leak could develop in the power braking system, leading to a vacuum loss and the reduction of power braking assistance. However, it said mechanical braking was still available to slow and stop the vehicle.

Drivers who experienced reduced power braking assistance should make a garage appointment immediately. The BMW recall follows a series by Toyota involving a number of different problems and affecting about nine million vehicles worldwide.
