MSPs urge govt to save Rosyth link  31 | 08 | 2010

JUST DAYS after ferry company DFDS Seaways confirmed it was pulling the plus on its passenger link between Rosyth and Zeebrugge in Holland, a number of Lothian MSPs have backed calls for the Scottish Government to help restore the service.

Labour's John Park tabled a motion at Holyrood in which he called on the government to support the reintroduction of a passenger service and develop Rosyth's status as an international transport hub.

Labour MSPs Rhona Brankin (Midlothian), George Foulkes (Lothians), Malcolm Chisholm (Edinburgh North & Leith) and Mary Mulligan (Linlithgow) were among those who backed the motion in the Scottish Government to save Scotland's only passenger ferry link with mainland Europe. DFDS has already stated it intends to increase its freight-only service.

"It's important we have alternative ways to go to the continent other than flying," Mr Chisholm said. "I hope the government will do everything they can to persuade the company to think again
