Mitchell fired-up for British GT at Spa posted in GT20 | 07 | 2022

FRESH FROM A podium finish in the previous round of the British GT Championship, former champion Sandy Mitchell returns to action this weekend when the series visits the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium. (Related: Mitchell bags Snetterton British GT podium)

Mitchell, the 22-year-old from Forfar, partnering team-mate Adam Balon in the No 72 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo prepared by Barwell Motorsport, narrowly missed out on a race win last time out at Snetterton.

The duo now head to Belgium fourth in the title race, crucially just 2.5-points off second place in the championship, determined to bag their second win of the season. (Related: Mitchell's Silverstone masterclass)

“We’ve already won the three-hour race at Silverstone, Mitchell, a Lamborghini factory driver and member of the British Racing Drivers’ Club, said, “and now we’re determined to win the two-hour race at Spa.

“We have a 15-second success time penalty to serve at our final pitstop — a result of our second place at Snetterton — which isn’t ideal, but we’re confident we can battle it out again with the cars at the front of the field.”

And Mitchell, personally backed by Tunnocks, Thorntons Solicitors and Black Bull Scotch Whisky, is looking forward to returning to Spa, which hosts the F1 Belgian Grand Prix. (Related: Scot Sandy Mitchell wins 2020 British GT Championship)

“I love Spa,” he continued. “I’ve been fortunate to win my class in the Spa 24Hrs race a few times. The circuit is a brilliant test of driving; it suits the Lamborghini perfectly, and it’s set in the most spectacular scenery.

“But this weekend’s race is a sprint, compared to the 24-hours race. We tested successfully at the circuit last month and it’s always great to be able to let the Lamborghini GT3 really stretch its legs.

“The whole Barwell team has shown throughout this season that we have the package to fight at the front of the field. And that’s exactly what we plan to do again this weekend in Spa.”
