LESS THAN A WEEK after winning the British GT Championship, Scots endurance racer Sandy Mitchell is back in action this weekend in the South of France. The 20-year-old from Forfar is targeting the GT World Challenge Europe Pro-Am title. (Related: Scot Sandy Mitchell wins British GT title)
Partnering Rob Collard and Leo Machitski, Mitchell will drive the No77 Vimetco Extrusion/Asterus Lamborghini Huracan Evo GT3 in the season finale, the six-hour, 1000kms race at Paul Ricard.
And the Scot returns to the sweeping, blindingly quick French circuit knowing he and his Barwell Motorsport team have already tasted success at Paul Ricard. (Related: Mitchell wins again at Spa24H)
“We won the Silver Cup class in the race in 2018 when it was part of the Blancpain GT Endurance Series,” Mitchell, personally backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Scotch Whisky, explained. “So we know how to win there.
“But it’s always a long, hard race, starting in daylight and finishing in the darkness, so it’s a tough event for everyone concerned. Plus it’s a 40-car grid, so the track will be really busy.”
Mitchell, who clinched the British GT title when he and Collard won the season-ending Silverstone 500 in mixed conditions last weekend, knows they have the package to be fighting at the front again on Sunday. (Related: Mitchell sees Euro GT win run off-track)
“We were six points adrift of the championship leaders at the start of the Silverstone race,” Mitchell, part of the Lamborghini Squadra Corse GT3 Junior Program and a member of the British Racing Drivers’ Club’s elite SuperStars programme, continued. “Now we head to France third in Pro-Am, just seven points behind the leaders.
“We also showed in the last round of the GT World Challenge Europe when we won the Pro-Am class in the Spa 24-Hours that we have the pace, reliability and strategy to win long endurance races.
“I know everyone at Barwell is still buzzing after winning the British title last weekend, and we’re going to carry that momentum into this weekend.
“This is our last race of the season and we’re all determined to give one final push to win another race. If we can do that, we know we’ll win the GT World Challenge Europe Pro-Am title.”
