Mitchell fired-up for British GT returnposted in GT30 | 07 | 2020

SCOT SANDY MITCHELL returns to the British GT Championship this weekend when he fires up his Black Bull Lamborghini Huracan Evo GT3. The 20-year-old from Forfar will tackle the two one-hour races at the season-opening double-header at Oulton Park. (Related: Mitchell returns to British GT with Black Bull)

Mitchell, who last competed in British GT in 2017, remains the series’ youngest-ever race winner when he took GT4 honours at Snetterton in August 2016, aged just 16 years 169 days. He’s also the youngest to grab pole position and fastest lap.

This weekend Mitchell, whose Lamborghini will again be prepared by Barwell Motorsport, will be partnered in the ultra-competitive series by former British Touring Car Championship race winner Rob Collard.

The BTCC veteran, winner of 15 touring car races, will make his full season British GT sportscar debut alongside the young Scot at the 2.69-mile, 17-turn parkland circuit in Cheshire.

And Mitchell, part of the Lamborghini Squadra Corse GT3 Junior Program and a member of the British Racing Drivers’ Club’s elite SuperStars programme, is keen to build on the relationship they established in the opening round of the GT World Challenge Europe at Imola last weekend. “It was good to work with Rob at Imola,” the Scot explained. “Given it was the first time he’d raced the Lamborghini in anger, he was right on the button. As you’d expect of a BTCC multiple race winner, he was quick and competitive.

“This weekend we’ll be back at a circuit we both know. The track suits the Lamborghini and I’m confident we’ll be mixing it at the front.”

And Mitchell, personally backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Scotch Whisky, is looking forward to returning to the British GT Championship.

“I had two happy and successful seasons in British GT right at the start of my sportscar career,” he explained. “I owe the championship a huge amount, certainly in terms of my career development. (Related: Mitchell inducted into BRDC SuperStars)

“Over the last few years I’ve been fortunate to race in Europe and in America, finishing on the podium and winning races, including the Silver Cup at last year’s Spa 24-Hours.

“Rob and I both know how tough and competitive the 21-car field is in the British GT. We’re under no illusion how difficult the challenge will be over the six race weekends and nine races, culminating with the three-hour race at Silverstone in November. But we, and the whole crew at Barwell, are up for the battle.”
