The 32-year-old from Kirkcaldy, already a race winner this season, followed up his fifth and seventh place finishes in today’s opening two races by bringing his Cobra Sport AmD with AutoAid/RCIB Insurance Racing Honda Civic Type R home in second place in the final encounter. “It’s been fantastic weekend,” Butcher, who finished just 0.420secs behind the Honda of race winner Josh Cook, and 0.472s ahead of former champ Ash Sutton’s Subaru, beamed.

“We’ve started all three races from P5 on the grid and bagged some really strong points all day. It was nice to have such strong third race.

“I just didn’t have an answer to Josh in front. I kept pushing as hard as I could and Ash kept me honest with the pressure from behind. I did have one eye on the rear-view mirror for most of the race.

“We made a wee tweak to the car for the final race and put a new pair of brake pads on and that gave me the edge to be able to run at the front. It was really good to bring it home.”

Butcher heads to the next round at Croft, near Darlington, next month tied at the top of the championship on 102 points, alongside triple champ Colin Turkington.

It was a tough day for Butcheer's fellow Scot Aiden Moffat. The Dalkeith racer finished 20th and 17th in the day's opening races, before bringing his Mercedes home in 10th in Sunday's finale.
