McPhee starts from pole at Mugelloposted in OTHER03 | 06 | 2017

SCOT JOHN McPHEE will start from pole position for tomorrow’s Italian Moto3 Grand Prix at Mugello after the fastest man in qualifying, Spaniard Jorge Martin, received a penalty from race stewards.

McPhee, the 23-year-old from Oban, polesitter in Argentina earlier this year, currently fifth in the championship and who has twice finished on the podium in 2017, initially missed out on the No1 position by just 0.148secs.

But after qualifying had been completed, Martin was handed a penalty for exceeding track limits, promoting McPhee to his second pole of the year.

“I was originally disappointed to be denied pole position by Jorge,” the British Talent Team Honda rider, who clocked a best time of 1min 57.324secs, said today, “but it’s great to have been promoted to the No1 slot.

“Starting from pole position gives me a great chance of scoring my first win of the season. Mugello’s an iconic track, and I’d love to win here.

“We made development changes to the bike after the last round at Le Mans, and they’ve made a big difference. I definitely have a bike capable of winning on Sunday, and that’s what I’m aiming for.”
