Hoy gets LMP3 Cup outingposted in OTHER28 | 06 | 2017

SCOTS OLYMPIC LEGEND Sir Chris Hoy will return to LMP3, for the first time since winning the inaugural European championship in 2015, when he competes in the LMP3 Cup in September. (Related: Chris Hoy — My amazing Le Mans debut)

Hoy — who won six Olympic gold medals on two wheels, in addition to his 11 world titles —  has been unveiled as the celebrity entrant in the guest United Autosports-run Ligier JSP3 for the British LMP3 series' season finale at Donington Park on September 16/17.

And Hoy, who completed the Le Mans 24-Hours on his debut in the world’s most gruelling endurance race last year, could partner another Scot, Sandy Mitchell, in the car.

Mitchell, the 17-year-old from Forfar and race winner in the British GT Championship and Rookie of the Year, is one of 10 drivers shortlisted in the LMP3 Cup's Young Driver initiative.

The winner — who will will be decided by public votes in an online poll — will share the LMP3 car with Hoy.

Hoy won the inaugural European Le Mans Series LMP3 title alongside another Scot, Charlie Robertson, in a Ginetta in 2015, before contesting the 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours in LMP2. This year Hoy has made a number of appearances in a Caterham.

"I'm really excited to be racing for United Autosports in the final round of the LMP3 Cup Championship at Donington Park," Hoy admitted. "To be sharing the drive with an aspiring young champion of the future will make it even more special, I'm sure."

United Autosports team owner and managing director Richard Dean added: "Chris is the perfect candidate as he's a very handy driver and a truly inspirational sportsman.

"You don't win a European title by not being committed or not having talent, plus Chris is Bronze-graded so he'll fit well with the winner, who will likely be Silver.

"We have a lot of testing planned for Chris and the prize drive winner."
