Franchitti joins Formula E TV teamposted in INDY25 | 04 | 2014

SCOTS INDYCAR LEGEND, Dario Franchitti, who was forced to retire from racing last year due to injury, is to join the TV commentary team for the inaugural FIA Formula E Championship.

The 40-year-old from Bathgate — four-time IndyCar champ, and three-time Indy500 winner — will act as co-commentator and driver pundit when the new electric car championship begins in September.

"I'm definitely looking forward to it," Franchitti, who suffered broken vertebrae and head injuries in last October's crash at Houston, said today.

"Not only will Formula E bring the completely new twist of an electric car to motorsport, but I've no doubt we'll also see some great racing.

"It's no secret I have a passion for the history and evolution of motorsports, so to be on the team that will now cover an exciting new racing category is a great honour.

"I can't wait to see how the Formula E cars perform when the lights go out in Beijing.

"From a driver's perspective, seeing how the races cope with all the intricacies of the cars' instant torque delivery will be fascinating.

"I'm really looking forward to it, and some of the drivers who have already committed to the championship look amazing."

Formula E races will take part in the centre of 10 leading cities around the world, including London, Los Angeles, Monte Carlo and Buenes Aires.

The 270bhp all-electric cars will be driven by many of the world's leading drivers, including a number of former F1 pilots including Bruno Senna, Nick Heidfeld, Jarno Trulli, Karun Chandock, Tonio Liuzzi, Takuma Sato.

Franchitti will join lead commentator Jack Nicholls, and presenter and pitlane reporter Nicki Shields, in the coverage of Formula E which will be broadcast in the UK on ITV.
